Nauru Submarine Cable Civil Works Groundbreaking Ceremony

The Nauru Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology and the Nauru Fibre Cable Corporation celebrated a significant milestone in delivery of Nauru’s first international submarine cable connection, with the official launch of project civil works. The groundbreaking ceremony held on 1 November marks the start of construction required to land the East Micronesia Cable in Nauru, including the beach manhole, duct work and the foundation and ancillary works for the cable landing station.

The East Micronesia Cable project is an AUD 135 million six-country collaboration between Nauru, Kiribati, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and funding partners Australia, Japan and the United States, to support critical telecommunications connectivity in the Pacific.

The project will provide faster, higher quality and more reliable internet connectivity to over 100,000 people across Nauru, Kiribati and FSM, enabling increased economic growth and social development opportunities, including availability of digital government services.

The project remains on track for completion by December 2025.
